Shubman Gill returns to India T20I squad as vice captain for the upcoming Asia Cup which is scheduled to begin from September 9 onwards. He replaces Axar Patel as India’s vice captain.

Team News

Apart from Gill , Sanju Samson (Wicket-Keeper) and Abhishek Sharma are the openers in the squad. Jithesh Sharma get into the squad as second wicket keeper option. 15 member India squad will be led by Suryakumar Yadhav.

India have their captain Suryakumar Yadhav , Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh as middle order batters. As pace bowling allrounders India have Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube , they also known for their power hitting abilities.

Axar Patel included in the squad as spin bowling All-rounder who bats at No.5. Kuldeep Yadhav and Varun Chakravarthy will handle the spin department. Jasprit Bumrah , Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh are the pacers selected for the tournament.

What Agarkar and Suryakumar Yadhav said?

“We obviously seen some leadership qualities in him , and his form in England was what we were hoping for. [He] exceeds all our expectations, which is a great sign when there is so much pressure as captain,” Selector chairman Ajith Agarkar said about Gill’s inclusion.

“With regard to Yashasvi, it’s just unfortunate again. There’s Abhishek Sharma: what he’s done over the last year or so – plus he can bowl a little bit – gives us that option if required. One of these guys was going to miss out.

“With regard to Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor its ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance,” Ajith Agarkar said.

“Last time when he [Gill] played T20 for India, post T20 World Cup when we went to Srilanka – not Zimbabwe – when I was leading ,he was the vice-captain. So that’s where we started a new cycle. After that, he got busy with all the Test series , and he didn’t get an opportunity to play T20s because he was busy playing Test cricket and Champions Trophy. So he’s there in the squad, and we’re happy to have him,” Suryakumar Yadhav said.
