Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announces his retirement from Indian Premier League (IPL). He made his announcement on X , formerly Twitter on Wednesday morning (27th August).

IPL and International Career

In his IPL career , Ashwin played 220 matches and picked 187 wickets with an economy rate of 7.2. Currently he was the fifth highest wicket taker in IPL. He played for Chennai Super Kings , Rising Pune Supergiant , Delhi Capitals , Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings).

Ashwin started his IPL career playing for Chennai Super Kings and ended his career with the same franchise. He captained Kings XI Punjab also.

In 2010 and 2011 IPL seasons , Ashwin played a huge role in Chennai Super Kings title wins. He returned to Chennai Super Kings in 2025 season after eight years playing for other franchise. He was brought by CSK for INR 9.75 crore and played 9 out of 14 matches.

38 year old all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin announces his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect after the drawn third test match between India and Australia in Brisbane in December 2024.

Ashwin retires from the game as second highest wicket taker for India in tests behind Anil Kumble (619 wickets). Ashwin played 106 tests for India and picked 537 wickets with best bowling figures of 7/59. He also have 6 test hundreds and 14 fifties.

In ODIs he picked 156 wickets from 116 matches and 72 wickets from 65 T20Is.

“Special day and hence a special beginning,” Ashwin said

“They say every ending will have a new start , my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today , but my time as an explorer of the game around various Leagues begins today.
