Former Srilanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya appointed as head coach of Srilanka men’s cricket team till 2026 T20 world cup. He is working as interim coach for Srilanka since July 2024 and Srilanka cricket has given him full time job after his impressive performance in this role.

Jayasuriya’s contract will run from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2026. His contract will end with the 2026 T20 world cup which will be hosted in India and Srilanka.

Under his short stint as interim coach Srilanka defeated India 2-1 in bilateral ODI series for the first time since 1997. After going 2-0 down in the test series against England in England, Srilanka came back well to beat England in the third test at The Oval.

He replaces Chris Silverwood who stepped down following poor T20 world cup in West Indies and USA. In the 2024 T20 world cup Srilanka failed to qualify for the super eight stage.

His appointment also came after former captain Mahela Jayawardene resigned from his post as the consultant coach in June.

Jayasuriya’s first assignment will be the white ball home series against West Indies which is scheduled to begin from October 13th. West Indies and Srilanka will play 3 ODIs and as many T20s.
