Massive 408 run defeat confirm India’s worst test loss, South Africa win series 2-0

South Africa crushed India by 408 runs in Guwahati and wrapped up the series 2-0. This marked their first test series win in India since 2000-01. On the other hand, India have now lost five of their last seven tests at home.

The series lost severely hurt India’s WTC chances as they dropped to fifth position. India have played nine tests in cycle, winning four , loosing four , with one ending in a draw.

First session – Day 5

With a win out of the equation, India’s approach was simply to draw the test. India were lucky early as Sai Sudharsan survived a no-ball and Kuldeep was dropped in slips. Simon Harmer finally bowled Kuldeep to give South Africa their first wicket of the day.

Dhruv Jurel’s innings was short lived as Harmer removed him for just 2. Stand-in captain Rishabh Pant was Harmer’s next victim , dismissed for 13 from 16 balls. He hit one four and a six in his knock. India were 58/5 at the time of his dismissal.

Sai Sudharsan (14*) and Ravindra Jadeja (23*) took India to 90/5 at tea.

Second Session – Day 5

After the break, left-arm spinner Muthusamy ended Sudharsan’s resilience. He edged to Markram at slips for 14 off 139 balls. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar resisted for 13 overs, delaying South Africa’s win. They added 35 runs for the seventh wicket.

Harmer struck again, giving South Africa the breakthrough with Sundar’s wicket. Attempting a reverse sweep off Harmer, Reddy was caught by the keeper for a duck.

Ravindra Jadeja (54) went on to hit another test half century. Finally , he was dismissed by Maharaj while stepping out to play the ball. Marco Jansen took an exceptional catch to dismiss Siraj, ending India’s innings and sealing the series.

India’s vulnerability against spin continued, with nine of their ten wickets falling to spinners. Spinner Simon Harmer took 9 wickets in the match.
