Captain Suryakumar Yadhav’s 84* off 49 balls helped India overcome spirited USA in their opening T20 World Cup match. India set USA a 162 run target and then restricted them to 132/8 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadhav named Player of the Match for his outstanding knock.

United States of America won the toss and elected to field first.

India Innings

Put in to bat, USA pacer Ali Khan dismissed the dangerous Abhishek Sharma for a duck early. For the second wicket, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Verma added 37 runs off 24 balls before van Schalkwyk’s over rattled India. In the final over of the powerplay, he dismissed Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Varma(25) and Shivam Dube (0) to reduce India to 46/4.

Rinku Singh (6 off 14 balls) and Hardik Pandya (5 off 6 balls) also failed with the bat. India fell into trouble, losing six wickets for just 77 runs in 12.4 overs.

Suryakumar Yadhav and Axar Patel’s 41 run partnership off 24 balls for the seventh wicket put India in a position to post a fighting total. The stand broken when Axar Patel was caught on the boundary line while trying to hit the ball over the ropes off Harmeet Singh.

A special innings from captain Suryakumar Yadhav helped India post more than a fighting total in the end. He took time to adapt to the conditions early, and a late flourish helped India to reach 161/9. In his knock of 84 runs off 49 balls, he hit 10 fours and four sixes.

Wicket Takers USA

Shadley van Schalkwyk did exceptionally well with the ball for the USA. He took four wickets for just 25 runs in his four over spell.

Harmeet Singh (2/26 in 4 overs) , Mohammad Mohsin (1/16 in 4 overs) and Ali Khan (1/13 in 2 overs) are the other wicket takers for USA.

USA Innings

Chasing 162, USA lost their top three batters – Andries Gous (6) , Monak Patel (0) and Saiteja Mukkamalla (2) for only 13 runs. Mohammed Siraj, who replaced the injured Harshit Rana in the squad, found a place in the playing XI as Bumrah was unwell. He took two wickets in the powerplay.

Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamoorthi kept them in the hunt with a 58 run partnership off 52 balls.When the partnership looked dangerous, spinner Varun Chakravarthy broke the stand by dismissing Milind Kumar for 34.

Axar Patel’s double wicket over, dismissing Sanjay Krishnamoorthy (37) and Harmeet Singh (0) put India in a comfortable position. Bowlers finally restricted USA to 132/8 giving India 29 run win.
