Padikkal 117 powers India to 300/5 on Day 1 of second Test

An outstanding innings from Devdutt Padikkal helped India reach 300/5 at the end of Day 1 in second Test. He scored his second century of the series while Gill also made useful 50.

Toss

After winning the toss, India chose to bat first and looked to make a strong start with the bat.

First Session

Jaiswal and Rahul gave India a solid start adding 37 runs together for the opening wicket. Lahiru Kumara broke the stand when Rahul chased a wide delivery and edged it to keeper Dickwella for 18 runs. Jaiswal looked fluent with his shots and appeared in good form scoring runs easily at other end.

Asitha Fernando bowled a beauty hitting Jaiswal’s off stump to dismiss him after the opener looked well set. He scored 45 runs from 53 balls hitting 9 boundaries. Devdutt Padikkal and captain Shubman Gill took India to 88/2 without any further loss of wicket at lunch.

Padikkal was lucky that as Srilanka fielders dropped him twice early first on 0 and again on 1.

Second Session

Devdutt Padikkal and Gill added 120 runs from 209 balls for the third wicket building a strong partnership for India. In the post lunch session India scores 99 runs for the loss of one wicket. Asitha Fernando broke the partnership before tea dismissing Gill for 50 in the final over of the session.

Gill became fourth youngest Indian batter to score 3000 Test runs.Devdutt Padikkal continued his good form remaining unbeaten on 63 at the end of the session.

Third Session

Rishabh Pant retired hurt on 3 early in the session after being hit on his left wrist by Lahiru Kumara. Then Jadeja and Padikkal built a strong 74 run partnership from 115 balls keeping India’s scoring going at a steady pace. Padikkal went on to hit his second century of the series with an excellent batting display.

Keshara Nuwantha bowled a beauty to dismiss the well set Padikkal for 117. Jadeja then guided India towards the end of the day with a valuable 43 run knock. He was bowled by Asitha Fernando in the final over of the day. At the end of the day India finished on 300/5 with Dhruv Jurel on 7 and Saransh Jain on 4.
