Virat Kohli’s 135 , Kuldeep’s 4/68 and Harshit’s 3/65 give India an 18 run win in first ODI at Ranchi. Batted first, India set a 350 target and bowled South Africa out for 332 in 49.2 overs.

South Africa won the toss and elected to field first.

India Innings

Jaiswal, who opened with Rohit Sharma gave India a short brisk start. He scored 18 runs from 16 balls before edged one of Burger to the keeper. Senior players Rohit and Virat put India in a strong position with a 136 run stand off 109 balls.

Rohit went on to hit his 60th ODI fifty and break the most ODI sixes record with 352. Finally Left arm pacer Marco Jansen broke the stand by dismissing Rohit for 57. Ruturaj, returning after a long gap, failed to capitalise as he fell for 8. Brevis took a stunning catch to dismiss him.

Baartan then claimed the fourth Indian wicket by removing Washington Sundar for 13.

Virat Kohli scored a brillant century to help India set a big total. It was his 52nd ODI century. Along with Rahul, he added 76 runs for the fifth wicket. Kohli was dismissed by Burger in the 43rd over of the innings.

Stand-in-captain K.L.Rahul (60 off 56) and Ravindra Jadeja (32 off 20) helped India reach 349 in 50 overs.

South Africa – Wicket Takers

Ottneil Baartman (2/60 in 10 overs) , Nandre Burger (2/65 in 10 overs) , Corbin Bosch (2/65 in 10 overs) and Marco Jansen (2/76 in 10 overs) are the wicket takers for South Africa.

Chasing 350, South Africa crumbled early, slipping to 11/3 inside 4.4 overs. Ryan Rickelton(0) , Quinton de Kock (0) and Aiden Markram (7) were the batters dismissed in the collapse. Breetze and Tony de Zorzi give some momentum, putting on a 66 run partnership off 62 balls.

Kuldeep broke the dangerous partnership by dismissing Tony de Zorzi, giving India a crucial wicket. He was trapped in front of the stumps when batting on 39. Matthew Breetzke and Brevis added a quick 53 runs off 40 balls for the fifth wicket. Despite losing wickets, they maintained a decent scoring rate.

Marco Jansen’s blistering 70 off 39 balls put South Africa within striking distance of victory. Kuldeep’s double wicket over, dismissing Jansen (70) and Breetzke (72), swung the momentum back in India’s favor.

Corbin Bosch fought valiantly for South Africa, scoring 67 off 51 balls, but they fell short by 17 runs.
