M.S.Dhoni steps down as Chennai Super Kings captain a day before opening game of IPL 2024 , where defending champions CSK face RCB in Chepauk on March 22nd. Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead the side.
“M.S.Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season.” CSK said in a statement.

Under Dhoni’s leadership CSK won 5 titles in 2010 , 2011 , 2018 , 2021 and 2023. Except in 2020 and 2022 they finishes in top 4.
Dhoni played 250 IPL matches and scored 5082 runs at an average of 38.79 and a strike rate of 135.92.
“Whatever Dhoni does , it is in the best interest of the team. I go to know of the decision just before the captains meeting. You have to respect his decision , it is his call , ” CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan told.

Ruturaj who made debut for CSK in 2020 scored 1797 runs at an average of 39.06 and a strike rate of 135.52. He also played 6 ODIs and 19 T20Is for India. He led Indian team to gold medal in Asian games last year.
