India Dominate Day 1 in Galle as Devdutt Padikkal Smashes Unbeaten 131

Devdutt Padikkal’s maiden Test hundred helps India dominate day one of the Galle Test against Srilanka with a strong batting display. Devdutt Padikkal remains unbeaten on 131 from 178 balls while K.L.Rahul scored 77 from 162 balls before retired hurt. India ended Day 1 of the first test at 288/2.

Toss

After winning the toss India captain Shubman Gill chose to bat first.

First Session

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and K.L.Rahul gave India a solid start at the top with a 47 run opening stand. Yashasvi Jaiswal attacked the Srilankan bowlers with a quick 32 run knock from 37 balls giving India a strong start. Jaiswal was run out after a mix up with K.L.Rahul giving Srilanka their first wicket.

Left handed batter Devdutt Padikkal and K.L.Rahul guided India to 101/1 by the end of the first session. K.L.Rahul was unbeaten on 32 runs while Devdutt Padikkal was also unbeaten on 35 runs at the end of session.

Second Session

Rain delayed the start of the second session and play resumed later with revised timings. India added 96 runs during the session without losing a wicket. K.L.Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal hit half centuries reaching 77 and 84 runs respectively during the session.

Third Session

K.L.Rahul retired hurt on 77 runs at the start of the third session. He left the field after suffering painful muscle cramps and discomfort in his forearm. Then captain Shubman Gill scored 16 runs from 28 balls before Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed him.

Devdutt Padikkal went on to score his maiden Test hundred for India reaching the milestone with outstanding batting display.

Rain interrupted the match for the second time forcing to stop play again. India were 239/2 at that time with Devdutt Padikkal on 107 and Rishabh Pant on 3. Play resumed and India finished Day 1 on 288/2 with Devdutt Padikkal unbeaten on 131 and Rishabh Pant on 27.

Wicket Takers Srilanka

Prabath Jayasuriya (1/77 in 24 overs) is the only wicket taker.
